DEFINING SAFETY
Having the ability to travel freely, non-restrictively and confidentially morning, afternoon and night without experiencing feelings of fear or concern.
DEFINING ACCESSIBILITY
Having the ability to walk, bike or bus to necessary resources including public transportation, jobs, commercial institutions, (grocery, retail, restaurants, fitness, auto, recreation, entertainment etc.), community institutions (schools, libraries and community/recreation centers), medical institutions, religious institutions, parks and greenspaces. According to the book, Independent for Life: Homes and Neighborhoods for an Aging America, a walkable community "is one in which there is proximity to both recreational and other destinations where direct, connected, and safe pathways are provided."[1]
DEFINING AFFORDABILITY
Providing options for housing, food, careers and transportation (necessary components of living), that are financially attainable to lower income individuals/families.
